Hey, it's Geb from Email Rev Lab!

The Story Lead:

At 1:32 PM today, I signed up for BUBS Naturals' free welcome kit.

The pop-up was bold. Clean. "YOU'VE GOT A FREE WELCOME GIFT." I clicked through, gave my email, gave my phone number, and got a final screen telling me I was in.

Then nothing.

1:33 PM. Nothing. 1:35 PM. Nothing. 1:38 PM. The email finally arrived.

Six minutes. In email marketing, that's an eternity.

The Brand Bridge:

BUBS Naturals was founded in 2017 by Sean Lake and TJ Ferrara to honor Sean's childhood best friend, Navy SEAL Glen "BUB" Doherty, killed in Benghazi, Libya in 2012. They donate 10% of every sale to charity. The mission is "Feel Great. Do Good."

Sean built this brand to move fast and live fully. Glen's whole philosophy was "Drive It Like You Stole It."

A 6-minute welcome email delay doesn't match that energy. While your buyer sits there waiting, your competitor is one Google tab away.

The Pop-up Test:

The pop-up flow is genuinely clever. Category selection first (Collagen Peptides, Creamers, Creatine, All Products) before asking for an email is a smart segmentation move. It tells Klaviyo what the buyer actually wants before they even hand over their contact info.

But the copy shifts mid-flow. Screen one says "Free Welcome Gift." Screen two says "Free Welcome Kit." The final screen says "You're In!" and asks them to start a subscription to claim it.

Three different framings in one funnel. Inconsistent copy at the point of signup creates friction right when you need trust.

The Tech Test:

Email entered at 1:32 PM. Email received at 1:38 PM. Six-minute delivery window.

According to Invesp, real-time welcome emails convert at 4.01%, while delayed ones average just 0.94%. Invesp That's a 327% gap between a fast send and a slow one. BUBS' 6-minute delay is sitting on the wrong side of that gap.

The likely cause: the flow trigger is set to a profile update event, not a form submission event. Profile updates take longer to process in Klaviyo. Switching the trigger fixes this.

The Inbox Test:

Primary tab placement. That's a genuine win. Most supplement brands land in Promotions. BUBS isn't most brands.

Subject line "Welcome to BUBS - Your FREE Welcome Kit is waiting for you" is benefit-led and clear. One watch: using "Free" prominently over time can flag spam filters as sending volume grows. Worth monitoring.

The Email Creative Test:

The welcome email is well-designed. Community framing ("You're officially part of the BUBS community"), strong hero image, product feature block, and a welcome kit offer listing specific items: MCT Oil Creamer, Vitamin C, a $20 Gift Card, BUBS Mug, and Electric Frother.

That specificity sells. People want to know exactly what they're getting.

But there's no standalone discount code in the email. The only path to the kit requires starting a subscription. Buyers who aren't ready to commit on day one have no lower-friction option to purchase. That's revenue left on the table.

The Klaviyo Fix:

The primary bottleneck is the 6-minute delivery delay.

  1. Go to your welcome flow in Klaviyo. Switch the trigger from "List Subscribe" to "Metric: Submitted Form." This fires faster.

  2. Set the first email delay to 0 minutes. Aim for delivery under 60 seconds after sign-up.

  3. Add a standalone 10% to 15% off discount code as a secondary CTA inside the email. Give buyers who aren't ready to subscribe a reason to purchase without committing to a plan.

The Impact Statement:

Real-time welcome emails convert at more than 4x the rate of delayed ones, according to Invesp. Invesp BUBS is currently leaving that conversion gap open with every signup.

The Curiosity Hook:

Here's what I'm curious about: BUBS has 100,000+ happy customers. How many more would have converted on day one if that first email arrived in under 60 seconds?

The Pitch:

BUBS built something rare. A supplement brand with a real story, a real mission, and a community that actually believes in it. They just need an email infrastructure that matches the product.

I send these audits daily because bottlenecks like this can be fixed in one day with the right information.

Want me to audit your Klaviyo account the same way?
