Hey, it's Geb from Email Rev Lab!

At 12:33 am, I typed my email into the footer bar on carlsonlabs.com and hit Sign Up.

Two minutes later, I got a "Confirm Your Subscription" email. Fine. Double opt-in is a choice.

At 12:35 am, I clicked the button. Got a "You've Been Subscribed" page.

By 12:56 am? Nothing. No welcome email. No discount. No intro. No story. Just silence.

That's 21 minutes and counting. In email marketing, 21 minutes is a lifetime.

The Brand Behind the Bottleneck:

Susan Carlson started this company in 1965 from a walk-up Chicago apartment. She was one of two women to graduate as a pharmacist from Purdue in 1963. She built Carlson into the #1 Cod Liver Oil brand in the US from scratch. Her daughters now run it.

Sixty years of trust built by one family. That legacy deserves a welcome email that actually arrives.

Right now, it doesn't.

The Pop-up Test:

No pop-up anywhere on the site. Zero.

The only email capture is a plain-text field buried at the bottom of the page. No offer. No reason to subscribe. No discount. No "get 10% off your first order." Just an "Email Address..." placeholder and an orange Sign Up button.

That's a massive miss. A well-placed pop-up with an offer captures subscribers before they bounce. Without one, Carlson is losing visitors who never come back.

The Tech Test:

Double opt-in is the real problem here.

They're using confirmed opt-in, which is fine for list hygiene. But they have zero post-confirmation flow set up. I confirmed at 12:35 am. No welcome email fired. Not even an automated "thanks for joining."

That's the bottleneck. The double opt-in is doing its job. The welcome flow isn't triggered after confirmation. The subscriber confirms and falls into a black hole.

The Inbox Test:

The confirmation email landed in Primary. Good.

Subject line: "Confirm Your Subscription." Sender name: "Carlson Nutritional Supplements."

Functional. Not compelling. But it did the job of getting me to click.

The problem isn't the confirmation. It's what happens after. And right now, nothing happens.

The Email Creative Test:

There's no email to evaluate after confirmation.

That's the entire problem in one sentence.

The Fix (Klaviyo, 3 Steps):

Step 1. In Klaviyo, go to Flows. Create a new flow triggered by the "Subscribed to List" metric, NOT the form submission. This fires after double opt-in confirmation.

Step 2. Set the time delay to 0 minutes. You want this to send the second they confirm. Subject line: "Welcome to the Carlson family. Here's what you need to know."

Step 3. In that first email, tell Susan's story. Father's heart issues. Natural vitamin E. The Chicago apartment. Then introduce your best-seller (Cod Liver Oil). Add a 10% first-order discount code. One CTA. Done.

The Impact Statement:

Every confirmed subscriber who gets no welcome email is a warm lead that goes cold. Carlson is hitting that wall tonight.

Here's what I'm curious about: how many people confirmed their subscription this week and never heard from Carlson again?

Carlson has 60 years of stories to tell. Susan's founding moment alone would convert cold subscribers into buyers. They just need the flow to actually fire.

I send these audits daily because bottlenecks like this can be fixed in one day with the right information.

Want me to audit your Klaviyo account the same way?

Reply to this email, and I'll send you a free breakdown of where your welcome series is leaking revenue.
